Freakishly Sweet

I Smell Liars/Decievers at Campbells! (Woah big surprise)

As you all may know, I’m nuts when it comes to avoiding MSG. It’s evil. It really is. Here’s my little bit of proof that it’s evil and/or that since its evil Campbells’s hides it in their foods (or used to before this ad). Or maybe it’s simply proof that they’re a bunch of deceivers.

Campbells has stated (I’ve heard that they have, I can’t say for sure) that they are dedicated to the umami taste and that they’ll never remove MSG from their foods.

I’ve also heard that they hid it. I called to ask if their “healthy low salt” for heart patients and similar has MSG, which I now know it does. I didn’t know what a specific ingredient was and now I know it’s non-pure but strong msg.  They denied that there was MSG which they weren’t lying about. It has to be 99.99% pure before they label it. It’s illegal to put 99.99% pure or more MSG in food without labeling it, but if it’s 99.98% pure they can put it in foods and called it “protein powder” or any number of  other names.

Sandra (boyfriends mother) showed me the ad below because she knows I avoid MSG. I thanked her for showing me but said they are dedicated to the umami taste and haven’t removed it. (I know they never will).

So I checked their website to see the ingredient list. I didn’t need to though when I came across their page on it.

Sure enough:

bottom of page, see highlighted area above

Who’s to say what a “small amount” is, lol.

Now what is yeast extract and its purpose?:

From wiki: Monosodium glutamate, also known as sodium glutamate and MSG, is a sodium salt of the non-essential amino acid glutamic acid.

Also, it doesn’t show in the picture but if you go to the page you’ll see “Autolyzed yeast extract is also the primary source of monosodium glutamate for the food industry.”

So glutamic acid IS msg. I state this for clarity and also because the image above states that yeast extract contains glutamic acid. they use it FOR the msg. msg is just another name for free glutamic acid.

What I’m mad about is that they lie to people. They put people at high risk of Sudden Arrhytmia Death Syndrome, and for people highly sensitive to me, a “small amount” could be WAY over the limit of 0, lol.
Their ad says “nothing to hide”… what as opposed to their other soup which they do HIDE MSG IN? LOL.  They’re basically admitting that they’ve hidden it and then they lie to folk like me.

WHO KNOWS but this might be safe for average people to eat once in a while, but not a large percentage of people with diabetes or any other disease.  What if they just have one form of msg instead of 7? They could have the same amount as before. Who knows. I certainly don’t trust them.

The crazy thing is that they are allowed to add what they want but they hide it anyway. They should just be honest. I guess more and more people realize how dangerous it is now. The FDA will even tell you msg is dangerous.

But yeah, they said there’s no msg to me, yet there’s MSG. I asked “what about a lesser form of glutamic acid” (which is the same question, but more specific and harder to avoid since they can say there’s no MSG if it’s not 99.99% pure), so since they couldn’t directly lie to me the woman on the phone kind of avoided my question. I said “well will you answer my question? i could die from arrhythmia if i try it.” she said “yes its safe, eat it” and I said “okay, I will.” but I guess I lied because I didn’t really intend to, I was hoping to call her bluff. Maybe they lie to their customer service reps. If she finds out the truth some day she’s going to hate herself for telling people its OK.

Critical thinking: If you have are discerning you might notice that they can claim they aren’t lying because it says on their website that it does infact have some msg. The problem is that it doesn’t say that on the ad anywhere. Not everyone has access to the internet and what percentage of people will go to the Campbells Select page when they see that ad?

And just for good measure and empathy’s sake, here’s two images from when I was hospitalized due to MSG poisoning.

Wow Faith, this one of the best-researched, most insightful blog posts on any subject I’ve come across.. You could get this published, with a little editing, for some site like Consumerist.com. Maybe go into the backstory/research on MSG and why it’s so popular as a shortcut flavor enhancer in the processed food industry. You’re like a “muckraker” journalist – we need more people like you waking the rest of us up, and keeping corporations and individuals accountable. Kudos!!

BTW, I have a dreamhost acct with a bunch of domains and would love to host your sites if you want to save some $. Consider it an early Christmas present. You can admin everything like you do now.

Thanks for the compliments :) Concerning your offer: I barely keep interest in this blog, but I do have a desire to write well-researched articles, so I’m sure it may keep me blogging even after I were to stop paying for hosting. My favorite thing to do in school was write reports and research papers, but you might notice this article has a few assumptions in it. One example is that I said I’ve only heard that Campbells is dedicated to the umami taste, which I can’t find a reference for. I wouldn’t want an article like this getting to many views because I would like to do some very solid research and have good references listed.

I’ve been thinking about how maybe I might stop blogging and all and save the money for something else (even though it is only 10bucks a month). So maybe I can take you up on your offer some time. I’m sure if the need comes up any time soon I can let you know. Otherwise, I think I’ll pass for now. I just like to have control and responsibility for myself, that’s all.
